Day 2
Today was our first day of interviews. We decided to do two rounds of interviews: one round in the morning, and one in the afternoon after lunch. The overall consensus was that we were all very nervous. None of us had done public interviews like this before and were all anxious to come up to strangers. We were anxious about being turned away, discouraged, and were overall intimidated by the idea of talking to strangers. However, the beautiful weather in NYC today helped put us all in a great mood and made us feel much more relaxed.
We started our first round of interviews at Washington Square Park. We started by walking around the park to see if there was anyone approachable enough for us to bring up the courage to come up to. Our goal was to interview a wide range of people: different ages, genders, and races. Most people in Washington Square Park were young college students which made us feel much more comfortable coming up to. I saw a girl sitting on a bench with a book and decided to come introduce myself. I told her about our project and asked her if she would be open to answering some questions on camera. Luckily, the girl was so nice and agreed. After that, we took turns coming up to different people. Though we did meet a few people who weren't open to being talked to, we weren't discouraged and continued to move on. Getting through our first interviews, we became more and more comfortable and less nervous. We talked to a couple more people and decided we were done with our morning round and went for lunch.
For our afternoon session, we went to the Brooklyn Bridge Park. We enjoyed the view of Manhattan from across the river as we looked for people to talk to. The process was much smoother as we had already gotten the hang of it. Ending our afternoon interviews, we went back home for a progress meeting and to go through our clips from the day. We discussed how today went, how everyone feels about the interviews, and what we did well and should do differently. To finish off the day, we talked about our goals for tomorrow: to talk to more people and be more comfortable with rejection.
