Week 2 Reflection
For this past week, our goal was to make significant progress and finish up our poster and documentary based on the interview clips we gathered from the first week. After a whole lot of ups and downs, we have finally met our goal and are satisfied with our products.
For most of the week, we spent time at home doing a lot of tedious and repetitive work on our poster and documentary. We split the jobs up based on our skill sets: Jack editing the documentary and Claire and I working on the art for the poster. Claire and I spent a lot of time sketching, painting, and gluing. Our idea for the poster was for it to be a representation or summary of our documentary. We would pick out a few of our favorite stories, sketch the interviewee, and write a short paragraph in their voice about their narrative. Claire and I have different sketching styles, so I was worried that the resulting product would be inconsistent. However, though we could see the different styles, the end sketches show so much character and I am very happy with how everything turned out. Claire and I also helped Jack with editing the documentary by contributing our thoughts and opinions. Overall, we had very good teamwork as we all split up our jobs but still managed to all contribute our touches to each of our project’s aspects. However, as good as our teamwork was, we also had some difficulties having three brains—-three sets of thoughts and opinions—-on the same products.
We encountered quite a few difficult discussions working through the documentary and poster. Most of our difficulties came from editing the documentary. Because editing is a one-man job, Jack did all of the editing on his own and showed us after to ask for our opinions. However, Claire and I were sometimes not on the same page with some of his decisions, resulting in Jack being frustrated that he had to make more changes to all the hard work he’s already done. I learned how to give my opinion while not making anyone feel unappreciated and also compromising when I need to. Working with two other people also taught me effective organization so that we effectively can split our work compatible to our skill sets so that everyone is comfortable with the tasks they are given and everyone can bring out their best for the final product.
Already being a few hours over the total requirement, my group will only have to add a few final touches and edits to the documentary and poster to finish off our Senior Project. Our last challenge will be figuring out how to bring our huge poster from New York City back to Proctor!
